Coming soon to a couch near you! We’ve been booking some intimate home shows in the Portland area this summer and are looking for some more homes to invade. So if you would like to host an Acoustic Living Room Concert please let us know!
Big Enough
I’ve been busy lately getting the house ready for our new baby and haven’t had much time for songwriting but here is a new song finally! This song was inspired mostly by a quote that Bryan Duncan shared on twitter by Oswald Chambers which lead me to look up the full devotional the quote came from. Which in turn lead me to look up several scriptures and start writing this new song! Ha!
“Our misgivings begin within ourselves when we tell Jesus that our circumstances are just a little too difficult for Him.”
—Oswald Chambers
A little fuller context of where this quote came from as part of Oswald Chambers devotional My Utmost For His Highest:
These doubts or misgivings about Jesus begin as we consider questions that divert our focus away from God. While we talk of our dealings with Him, others ask us, “Where are you going to get enough money to live? How will you live and who will take care of you?” Or our misgivings begin within ourselves when we tell Jesus that our circumstances are just a little too difficult for Him. We say, “It’s easy to say, ‘Trust in the Lord,’ but a person has to live; and besides, Jesus has nothing with which to draw water—no means to be able to give us these things.”
—Oswald Chambers

Part of why this struck me so greatly is that we have been undergoing financial difficulties for a long time, struggling to keep the house and pay the bills and now with a new baby on the way it has lead to a lot of questions. But God has been faithful to provide time and again even when we let our fears and doubts overtake us. In the middle of this situation my father had also just undergone major surgery to correct a potentially life threatening condition. After his surgery he had complications and was going downhill very fast but we believed and prayed and he is now making a recovery!
This song is an attempt to address those situations that might lead us to allow fear and doubt to press in and shut out the still small voice of God that says “Be Still! I am in control and I have this covered! I have promised to provide and I will.” Just to clarify my meaning, I’m not implying God is going to make us rich, but that he knows our needs and even if we go through rough times and difficult circumstances he will be there with us.
This song speaks to that shutting out of the voice of fear and doubt and recognizing that He is Big Enough no matter what we are facing from financial hardship, to disease and health issues, even to conquering the grave and eternal life.
Here are a few of the scripture passages that I also pulled from in writing this song. I will try to get a recording of it posted soon so others can hear it too.
I am the Lord, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?
—Jeremiah 32:27
There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear
—1 John 4:18a
“Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?”
—John 4:11-12
A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”
—Mark 4:37-41
Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.
—Psalm 55:22
Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
—1 Peter 5:7
Before they call I will answer, while they are yet speaking I will hear.
—Isaiah 65:24
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
—Philippians 4:6-7
Lyrics
Big Enough
Our misgivings begin
When we think our circumstances
Are too big for him
In our worries and our doubts
We let our fears turn into shouts
Drowning out his words, “Be still”
He is bigger than the waves
He is bigger than the grave
He is bigger than my doubts
If I just let him cast them out
His perfect love is big enough
When the money’s spreading thin
The doctor comes back in the room
Looking so grim
He promised that he would provide
So let’s trust him with our lives
Shut out fear’s unending lies
He is bigger than my fears
He is bigger than my problems appear
He is bigger than my needs
If I just lay them at his feet
His perfect love is big enough
Just like the woman at the well
I find myself so quick to tell, Jesus,
“You’ve no way to draw a drink
For the well is just too deep”
But you are bigger than my doubts
You are bigger than the waves
You are bigger than the grave
You are bigger than my doubts
If I just let you cast them out
Your perfect love is big enough
You are bigger than my fears
You are bigger than my problems appear
You are bigger than my needs
If I just lay them at your feet
Your perfect love is big enough
Oh, my Jesus, you are big enough
